Academician Ion Tighineanu’s nomination for president of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences will be put to a vote at the Academy’s General Assembly on April 9.

The vote is secret and the candidate wins if a simple majority of the Academy fellows attending votes in favor.

Academician Mitrofan Ciobanu, chair of the candidacy selection committee, told a press conference that all the selection procedures were strictly observed and were transparent.

Ion Tighineanu won the nomination of two of the Academy’s three divisions. A contestant was proposed by the third division following a secret vote, but the candidate eventually withdrew, said Ciobanu.

Mitrofan Ciobanu went on to add that only five Academy fellows met all the criteria to become the Academy’s president. And Ion Tighineanu, now acting president, fit the bill best, according to the head of the selection committee.

The post fell vacant after Gheorghe Duca resigned last November citing health reasons. Duca, who held the job for 14 years, left amid accusations of abuse of office.
