Absence of technology prevents adequate treatment of disabled children

“We are discussing new methods of providing professional treatment for children with disabilities. The specialists know them, but we cannot implement them yet in Moldova as we lack technology,” Galina Moraru, senior rehabilitation specialist at the Ministry of Health, said in a seminar centering on the reeducation of children with cerebral motor infirmity and polyhandicap, Info-Prim Neo report. The seminar focusing on medical rehabilitation problems brought together specialists of national recovery centers and professor M Le Metayer, specialist in cerebral motor infirmity and founder of the Motricite Cerebrale Institute in France. “The seminar was organized with the aim of discussing professional treatment methods for children with disabilities. We hope we will be able to implement them soon within projects as over 40% of the children in Moldova are born prematurely and a large part of them become disabled,” said Galina Moraru. The specialists discussed techniques of identifying disabilities, the problems encountered by the disabled children and the work done to reeducate the children with cerebral palsy and polyhandicap. Diana Covalciuc, director of the Recovery Center “Hippcrates”, said the institution provides a wide range of services for children with disabilities, while their families are helped to better understand the needs of their children. She stated that more than 400 children, many of whom with severe disabilities, receive treatment at the center yearly. According to Diana Covalciuc, about 50% of the children with disabilities encounter difficulties in becoming integrated into society or education institutions and the specialists help them overcome the obstacles. The seminar was organized by the Ministry of Health of Moldova and the Recovery Center “Hippcrates”.
