The police discovered a criminal group dealing with currency smuggling. About US$400,000 that was allegedly smuggled into Moldova from European states was seized from this, IPN reports.
The illegality was documented on Thursday evening at the Cahul customs post. Searches followed in the municipality of Chisinau as a result of which a total sum of about US$400,000 was seized. The police presume the scheme is broader and implies the smuggling of millions of dollars.
The General Police Inspectorate said the scheme involved three men who were arrested for 72 hours. The director of an Orhei transport company aged 60 is the main suspect. This presumably traveled as a passenger by the unit of transport that entered the country with the undeclared amounts. Later, the money was passed on to the other two men aged 26 and 27 from Odessa, Ukraine.
It is not yet known what the money smuggled into the county was used for.
