Approximately 900 outbred cats and dogs with owners will be neutered free of charge in the capital city until September 1 this year.

Karl Luganov, acting head of the Animal Protection Unit of the General Public Amenities Division, has told IPN that the goal of the project is to prevent the uncontrolled breeding of the populations of cats and dogs and to avoid the abandonment of animals.

“Some people do not have money to sterilize their pets. After these cats and dogs reproduce, they are thrown out and we have problems as we need to capture these animals that are without an owner already. The procedure is more costly this way,” stated Karl Luganov.

As part of the project, pets will be sterilized, microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. There will be issued the animal’s veterinary passport.

The concession is intended for pensioners or persons with low incomes. “An owner can sterilize at most two animals. There will be neutered only female animals,” said the official of the Public Amenities Division. The application will be submitted after completing a questionnaire on www.dglca.md, in the Sterilization Application division. Such requests can be also made on (0 22) 99 77 77. Within a week of the submission of the application, the animal owners will be contracted and invited to have their pets spayed.

About 1.5 million lei was earmarked in the municipal budget for this project.
