Pipes at about 400 addresses in Chisinau froze overnight leaving homes and offices without water, Info-Prim Neo reports. Constantin Becciev, the director of the water utility Apa-Canal Chisinau, told the City Hall's ordinary meeting on Monday that the leading cause was the failure to observe depth standards when installing pipes. Another cause is inadequate insulation. “Our technicians responded promptly to the consumers' calls for help with unfreezing the pipes. For steel pipes, we use electric equipment. But for plastic pipes, there's nothing we can do. The only solution is to replace them”, said Constantin Becciev. In one case, an entire apartment building on Moscova Boulevard remained without water after the main pipe froze due to extreme temperatures. During repair, water to the dwellers was provided in tanks. Apa-Canal Chisinau is warning home owners to ensure that water and sewer pipes are installed at a minimum depth of 1.2 meter. Additionally, the utility will provide administrators of apartment buildings with guidelines on how to protect pipes in extreme temperatures.
