About 10,000 young people challenge election outcome in Chisinau

Roughly 10,000 young persons protested in the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau on Monday evening, disputing the results of the legislative elections won by the Communist Party the third consecutive time, Info-Prim Neo reports. The protest lasted for about four hours. It started in the square near the monument to Stephan the Great, where several hundred young people gathered initially. They lit by a candle and declared April 6 ‘a day of national mourning’. Later, they marched until the Presidential Office, blocking the traffic on Stephan the Great Blvd. They chanted ‘Down with the Communists’, ‘Freedom’, Rigged Elections’, ‘I Fight, I Resist, I’m Anti-Communist’, ‘Down with the Dictatorship’, etc. After approximately half an hour, the already about 5,000 people headed to the Great National Assembly Square. Meanwhile, Stephan the Great Blvd. remained closed for traffic. The protesters also demanded that the April 5 elections are rerun. The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Vlad Filat, the vice president of the Liberal Party and Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca, the member of the Moldova Noastra Alliance Leonid Bujor, leaders of the European Action Movement and other politicians joined the young people later. They expressed their solidarity with the protesters against the Voronin clan. In the end, a part of the protesters chanted in front of the Central Election Commission, demanding that the elections are rerun. The protest was supervised by the police. No incidents happened. The event was organized by several NGOs, while the call to take part in the protest was transmitted on the Internet and from person to person on Monday, said attendees. The young people agreed to meet again in the Great National Assembly Square on Tuesday, April 7, at 10.00.
