The child aged one month who was found abandoned in a baby carriage in the stair of a block of flats in the evening of January 23 was taken to the Mother and Child Institute where he is under the supervision of doctors. His state of health is satisfactory. Later, if the authorities do not identity his relatives and the child feels fine, he will be placed at a maternal center managed by the Chisinau Division for the Protection of Children’s Right.

Contacted by IPN for a comment, the Division’s acting head Lucia Caciuc said that a note was left near the child with such data as the date, month and year of birth of the baby. This will help the authorities to find the child’s relatives.

“We will make requests to the maternity hospital to see who was born in the given period and will make effort to identify the parents by the child’s sex. We will see what state the mother is in, if she is liable to punishment. There are a number of aspects,” stated Lucia Caciuc.

She also said that the ideal variant is to return the child to the family or to the extended biological family. “If the mother is identified, it will be proposed placing the child under the relatives’ tutelage. Most of the times, psychologist works with the mother and this takes the child back,” explained Lucia Caciuc.

Natalia Stati, press officer of the Chisinau Police Division, has told IPN that the boy was found by dwellers of an apartment building at about 7pm on January 23. This was in a baby carriage inside the block.

Legal action over leaving in danger was started in this case. The mother faces a fine of up to 27,500 lei, 180 to 240 hours of community service or at most two years in jail.
