A baby boy aged nine months, who was abandoned by his mother, was taken to the Mother and Child Center in Chisinau. The mother native of Corjova village left the child at her relatives in Vadul lui Voda town, saying she cannot maintain him. The family took the boy to the local emergency medical assistance station. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Lidia Cojocaru, doctor at the Health Center in Vadul lui Voda, said that the child is in a satisfactory condition, but was admitted to the Mother and Child Center as required by the law. Andrei Cociorba, responsible for minors at the police department in Vadu lui Voda, said that they have not yet identified the mother. The woman left her home and nobody knows her whereabouts. Valentin Plamadeala, senior specialist at the Children’s Rights Division of Ciocana district, has told Info-Prim Neo that the abandoned children are placed in a healthcare institution for examination. After the report is drawn up and signed by officials of the local mayors’ office, it is sent to the Children’s Rights Division. Then the child is placed in a residential institution, according to his age and needs. Meanwhile, the social assistants look for information about the situation of the child in order to establish his status. The biological parents can ask that the child be place in a residential institution on a temporary basis, but they have to assume certain responsibilities like find employment, visit the child etc. If they abandon the child for good, he can be integrated into the extended family. Ultimately, the child is put up for adoption if there is no other solution, but only 6 months later. The mother that abandoned the child can change up her mind until the court passes judgment and deprives her of parental rights, Plamadeala said. Under article 67 of the Family Code, the parents can be deprived of parental rights if they avoid exercising them, inducing paying maintenance.
