Abandoned houses in Mereni (Anenii Noi) and Rezeni (Ialoveni) communities, as well as public buildings no longer used by villagers, will be renovated and offered to Moldovan refugees. The project is supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the EU, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a UNCHR press release, the houses will be offered to the refugees for a 5 year period, during which they will pay only utility bills and no rent. This should help them gather money to buy a new home. Mereni and Rezeni communities are situated 30-35km from Chisinau. Due to the local developed infrastructure, the refugees will be able to get a job and send their children to school and kindergartens. The issue was discussed during a meeting between representatives of UNHCR, of the Bureau for Migration and Asylum and of NGOs defending refugees’ rights. UNHCR is an organization for refugees mandated by the United Nations to lead and coordinate international actions for worldwide protection of refugees and solving their problems.
