A 14-year-old teenager ended up with a sewing needle in his ribcage following an unfortunate household accident. He was hospitalized in Balti with major danger to vital organs (lung, heart), and was then transferred to the Institute of Mother and Child, where he underwent successful surgery, IPN reports.

Initially the teenager was rushed to the Balti Clinical Hospital, where efforts were made to locate and extract the foreign body, but this failed. On 5 February the decision was taken to transfer the patient to the National Scientific-Practical Center of Pediatric Surgery "Natalia Gheorghiu" of the IMC.

Following thorough investigations, including a computerized tomography scan carried out in the Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Service, the foreign body was precisely identified. The medical team decided to perform thoracoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive but complex procedure in this particular case. The operation was scheduled and successfully performed the same day.

The Institute of Mother and Child reports that, post-operatively, the patient is doing well and is being cared for in the Emergency Surgery Section.
