A platform of women MPs of the Parliament of the eleventh legislature was launched in Chisinau today. This is a new framework of cooperation and intra-institutional dialogue that will empower the Moldovan female MPs to act together to strengthen and promote the rights of women in the country. The platform will promote equity, equality and women’s rights in Moldova, IPN reports.

The Parliament of the eleventh legislature has a record number of female MPs – 40 out of 101 MPs. The President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu said the platform is a good opportunity of cooperation between women with different political views, noting that this cooperation should serve the public interests. “It is not easy to be a woman in politics in our society. I say it from my own experience. But I hope that my example and the example of my colleagues from the Parliament, the Government and the local public administration will encourage girls and women in Moldova to have more confidence in themselves and to realize their creative potential here, in the Republic of Moldova,” stated the official.

President Sandu noted that domestic violence remains one of the pressing problem experienced in Moldova. The sustainable solutions to this problem should include the creation of economic opportunities and the modification of social traditions.

According to Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița, the women in Moldova daily face situations in which discrimination is perceived as an element of normality. “We have the duty to make sure that the voices of all the women are heard, especially of those who until now couldn’t or didn’t know how to defend themselves when they faced discrimination and abuse. Only this way we will be able to create preconditions for fully realizing the creativity and innovative spirit of the women in our country,” stated the Premier.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said that what Parliament has been done until now to promote women in politics, as regards the fighting and prevention of violence and return to work of mothers, was due to women. “This world will be saved by women as, regrettably, the men of the globe adopt decisions that cost the mankind a lot. I mean the war in Ukraine… Women bring peace. Women think ten times before taking a decision as they think about society, the family, children, the future,” stated Igor Grosu.

The event was staged by Moldova’s Parliament with support from the partners – UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women and UNICEF.
