On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Unification of Romania and Bessarabia by the People’s Council (27 March 1918), the Association of Historians of Moldova in concert with the historical and cultural journals “Cugetul” and “Destin Romanesc” organized a series of activities dedicated to this event on March 27.
Nicolae Dabija, president of the Democratic Forum of Romanians from Moldova and editor-in-chief of the weekly “Literatura si Arta”, has told Info-Prim Neo that invitees from Bucovina, Transylvania, Muntenia and from all the Romanian provinces have come to Chisinau to take part in the activities. The writer expressed his confidence that God will continue to be Romanian, as he had been in 1918, and will do justice to the Romanian people.
On Thursday morning, delegates from Moldova and Romania laid flowers at the monument to Stephan the Great. A number of pensioners said that this day has a special importance to them also because they remember the times when Moldova was part of Greater Romania and when they studied in Romanian schools in childhood.
Colonel-engineer Ioan Judea, president of the Heroes’ Cult Association from Targu Mures, said that the date of 27 March 1918 constituted a first step towards the union of all the Romanians. The next was Bucovina, followed by Transylvania on December 1. “Mihai’s dream came true as Romania was unified,” Ioan Judea said. He voiced hope that with God’s help, Mihai Viteazu’s dream will turn into reality nowadays too.
Later on Thursday, a delegation composed of writers, historians and artists will go to the Armenesc Cemetery to lay flowers to the graves of the members of the People’s Council. Afterward, the delegation will go to Ialoveni to take part in the inauguration of the Avenue of the Members of the People’s Council and of the Union Square on Mateevici Street. An exhibition of documentary photos titled “Bessarabia 1917–1918. Chronicles of the Events” will be opened later in the day. The festivities will end with a solemn meeting dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Bessarabia’s Union with Romania that will start at the Cultural Center “Leogrand” at 5 PM.
