9 digits for landlines starting tomorrow

Starting tomorrow, July 1, in order to call a landline phone number all residents of Moldova will dial 9 digits instead of 5 or 6 as it is presently practiced. In order to dial a number from the same locality, the fixed telephony subscriber will have to dial “0” + code of the geographic zone + subscriber’s number, reports Info-Prim Neo. For example, the capital’s residents will dial 0 22 + six digit subscriber number to phone someone in Chisinau. Those from Balti will call within the municipality dialing 0 231 + five digit subscriber number. Residents of Cahul and Briceni will dial 0 299 + five digit subscriber number, and respectively, 0 247 + five digit subscriber number. All subscribers within the country will phone using this format. Previously, head of National Telecommunications Agency (ANRCETI) Sergiu Satnic stated that the 9-digit format is part of the new provision of the National Numbering Plan. Starting July 1, if callers dial 5 or 6 digits they will be informed of the correct way to dial, using 9 digits. The telephonic robot will operate until August 1, 2012. In the new setting, the emergency numbers “901” (fire brigade), “902” (police), “903” (medical emergencies), “904” (gas-related emergencies), as well as national short numbers that start with “1” will remain unchanged. For calling landlines from the Transnistrian region 0+1600+prefix+number must be dialed. The implementation of the new format will not modify current tarrifs. There are 1.2 million landline subcribers in the Republic of Moldova.
