In 86 schools, or 8% of all schools, students still go to the toilet in the courtyard, with pit latrines, which, according to experts, affects the hygiene conditions and comfort of students.

In a response to an inquiry made by IPN, the Ministry of Education and Research said that out of 86 schools, 32 have sanitary facilities inside, but they are not functional due to the lack of sewerage and water supply systems.

A number of 297 institutions need to have their sanitary facilities renovated and, in some cases, new toilets need to be built.

By 2026, the authorities plan to renovate more than 160 sanitary facilities in schools. The project will be implemented by the National Office for Regional and Local Development with the assistance of development partners and in partnership with the Ministry of Education.
