71% of the Moldovans consider that they should be better informed about the effects of Moldova’s integration into the European Union, shows a poll carried out by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of Moldova. The people believe that the authorities and the political parties should discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the European integration with them, instead of politically speculating on this issue, IPN reports.

The Association’s chairman Victor Mocanu said the data show that society is not sufficiently informed about the European Union.

52% of those polled consider it is important and very important for Moldova to initial the Association Agreement with the EU at the EaP Summit in Vilnius. 31% said they are against the signing of the agreement, while 17% didn’t form an opinion in this respect. 64% of the population wants to obtain a visa-free regime with the EU as soon as possible. 9% said they are against, while 27% didn’t provide a clear answer.

58% of the Moldovans consider that their life will become better if Moldova joins the EU, while 23% believe that the living conditions will worsen or will worsen significantly.

The respondents were also asked how they would vote next Sunday if a referendum on Moldova joining the EU was held. 46% of them said they would vote in favor, 21% would vote against, while 13% would not take part in the referendum. 20% of those questioned didn’t state their opinion.

If there would be two options at the referendum, 42% of the respondents would choose the European Union, while 38% the Eurasian Union.

The sociological study “Moldova between the European and Eurasian options” was conducted between October 21 and November 2 on a sample of 1,192 people from 79 settlements. The margin of sampling error is +/– 2.8%.
