The local elected officials who will renounce or lose their seats before term will cover the costs of holding elections in their constituency. A relevant amendment to the Transnistrian electoral legislation was approved at the March 18 sitting of the Supreme Council, Info-Prim Neo's correspondent in Tiraspol reports. A number of 661 candidates will run for seats in the local and district councils in the March 28 elections. Petru Denisenko, chairman of the Transnistrian Central Election Commission (CEC), said the registration of candidates is over. The Commission received a number of complaints in which applicants dispute zonal electoral councils' decisions not to register them as electoral contenders. “Measures are being taken to remove the shortcomings and contradictory provisions from the electoral legislation. The CEC has drafted a bill to modify the Electoral Code. The legislative initiative will be submitted to the Supreme Council for examination after the elections,” Petru Denisenko said. The March 28 elections in the breakaway Transnistrian republic will be monitored by observers from Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Nagorno-Karabakh and Russia.
