Fifty students from 18 higher education establishments of Moldova went through to the final of the Merit Scholarships 211 contest, winning by a scholarship of 12,000 lei, Info-Prim Neo reports. A number of 245 applications have been filed for the sixteenth Merit Scholarships contest. For the first time this year, the winners haven’t been divided into categories. Everyone received scholarships of the same value. The contest is organized by the Educational Advising Center with support from the Rectors Council of Moldova. Educational Advising Center director Angela Muset said it was hard for the jury to choose the best students of the best. Almost 4,000 applications have been submitted and examined during 16 years, since the contest was launched. More than 1 000 students received scholarships. “We hope that this contest will represent a launch pad towards sustainable plans for many of the young people. Owing to the sponsors of honor – BC Moldova Agroindbank SA and Orange Moldova – we ensure the continuity of this project and invest in erudite and wise young people,” Angela Muset said in the scholarship award ceremony. Attending the event, Prime Minister Vlad Filat thanked the young scholars for the work they do and voiced hope they will soon influence the decision-making processes in the country. “I recently made an order that oblige the nongovernmental organizations to offer the young people the possibility of doing internships at these institutions. I want to see these young people in places where decisions are taken as soon as possible,” he stated. The Premier, together with the Association of Young Historians of Moldova, awarded the winners by a set of books. He said that we will be closer to the European values if we study more. The Merit Scholarships Program was launched in 1996 on the initiative of Soros-Moldova Foundation to encourage the academic, scientific and extracurricular accomplishments of the Moldovan students. A number of 1 080 students had been awarded scholarships during the 16 years.
