Asked what they consider is the best solution for ensuring the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova, 47% of the respondents answered “Neutrality”, 14.1% – “Union with Romania”, 11.3% – “Entry into the EU”, 6.1% – “Entry into NATO”, 4.3% – “Cooperation with Russia”, 1.6% – “Cooperation with the U.S.”, 0.3% – “Another one”, while 15.4% didn’t provide a response, shows the barometer “Republic of Moldova and Romania in tumult of regional crises” that was presented by the Institute for Political Science and International Relations “Ioan I.C. Brătianu” of the Romanian Academy in partnership with the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul” of Chisinau, IPN reports.
Asked if the potential armed conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine can come true, 29% of those surveyed responded that this is “Probable”, 27.2% – “Rather improbable”, 19.6% – “Highly improbable”, 8.9% – “Very probable”, while 15.3% didn’t answer.
Asked what the best option for the Republic of Moldova would be if a war started between Russia and Ukraine, 43.1% of those polled said the country should remain neutral, 22.6% said Moldova should conclude a military alliance with the Russian Federation, 12.5% said it should unite with Romania, 8% said it should become part of NATO, while 13.8% didn’t give an answer.
Asked what Moldova could do if it faced a situation similar to that in Ukraine with respect to the Russian Federation, 19.9% of those interviewed said it should obtain military support from Romania, 11.6% said support should be obtained from the EU, 10.4% from NATO, 7.5% from the U.S., 3.9% from Russia, 2.1% from Ukraine, 0.5% from Turkey, 0.5% from Poland, 0.1% from somewhere else, 4.2% from nowhere, while 39.2% didn’t respond.
Asked how they would vote if a referendum on Moldova’s entry into the European Union was held next Sunday, 50.6% answered they would vote for, 30.7% would vote against, 3.1% would not take part in this, 13.4% haven’t decided or don’t know, while 2.2% didn’t respond. In an eventual referendum on entry into the Eurasian Economic Union (Russia – Belarus - Kazakhstan), 41.5% would vote for, 37.2% would vote against, 2.8% would not take part, 15.6% haven’t decided, while 2.9% didn’t provide a response.
The barometer “Republic of Moldova and Romania in tumult of regional crises” was carried out by the Center of Sociological Investigations and Marketing “CBS-Research” on a sample of 1,134 persons from 13 geographical regions that coincide with the territorial-administrative units that existed before the return to districts. The margin of sampling error is +-3%. The data were collected during January 24 – February 5, 2022 through face-to-face interviews.
