Two citizens of Ukraine charged with the smuggling of over €440,0000 into Moldova in April 2023 were sentenced to nine years in prison. The money was confiscated for the benefit of the state. The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said that this was one of the largest seizures of contraband money in Moldova last year, IPN reports.
Both of the cars used to commit the crime will also be confiscated for the benefit of the state. The vehicles are worth over 140,000 lei and 240,000 lei respectively.
The two men were detained on April 13 at the entrance to Cimișlia. The €440,000 was camouflaged in a car speaker. Later, both the organizer of the smuggling and the carrier of the money were remanded in custody.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases, the case of attempted smuggling of €550,000 was sent to court last year. A person who attempted to smuggle over €1.5 million was convicted in 2021.
