Forty young people with hearing impairments from both sides of the Nistru River had been trained within the project “Say No to Discrimination” that was implemented by the Association of Deaf Children of Moldova in partnership with the Tiraspol-based Rehabilitation and Counseling Center for Children and Young People with Mental and Physical Development Disabilities “OSORT”. The results of the project were summed up in a news conference at IPN on November 10.

The head of the Association of Deaf Children of Moldova Veronica Capatici said the young people attended training courses on human rights and nondiscrimination both in Chisinau and in Tiraspol. There was also staged a summer school. Specialists from both banks of the Nistru River worked out a practical guidebook on the employment of young people with disabilities. It was available in Romanian and Russian. There were also printed informative brochures and organized seminars within which the young people were trained how to present themselves at an employment interview and how to write a CV or a letter of intent.

The project’s team had a number of meetings with economic entities from both sides of the Nistru River with the aim of informing them about the potential of the young people with disabilities on the one hand, and of finding out the difficulties they encounter when they decide to hire a person with special needs. The project’s team initiated cooperation relations with the authorities, which turned out to be receptive.

The project culminated with a Job Fair for Persons with Disabilities, which was the first of the kind held in Moldova. The event involved 25 employers. As a result of the fair, seven persons found a job, while 131 young people were invited to employment interviews.

The project to the value of over US$26,000 was launched last November and was supported financially by the EU, being co-financed and implemented by UNDP.
