Some 40% of those infected with the novel coronavirus in Moldova recovered. There are now over 3,100 active cases of infection in the country. The number of infections is expected to rise this week. 253 patients are in a serious state, director of the National Public Health Agency Nicolae Furtună was quoted by IPN as saying in a news conference staged by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection on May 15.

Nicolae Furtună said the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 on May 14 totaled 5,553. The death toll stands at 194.

The largest number of infections with the novel coronavirus was recorded on May 13, mostly at two hotbeds, at placement centers in Soroca and Tighina – 80 cases. That day, there were also tested the family members of employees and beneficiaries of the centers.

Nicolae Furtună noted that the COVID-19 death rate in Moldova is 55 deaths per 1 million people. Official statistics also show that the fatality rate from the total number against the number of deaths is 3.5%.

According to the weekly report of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, the average age among those infected is over 47, while the average age among the persons who died is 66 years. More than 98% of those who died suffered from at least one disease, principally cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

“When we are not heard when warning that the population should stay at home and take preventive measures, the contagion rate varies depending on the people’s behavior and steps taken to prevent infection with COVID-19,” stated Nicolae Furtună.
