The police officers of 37 local police inspectorates on November 5 received 164 new work vehicles. The units of transport were purchased and equipped with money provided by the European Union, IPN reports.

In an event held in the Great National Assembly Square, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said it is very important that these vehicles will go to local police stations as they will help increase their reaction capacity and the quality of the provided services. Consequently, the people’s confidence will grow.

Minister of the Interior Dorin Recean said the subdivisions of the Ministry pursue two goals – a quantitative one, to intervene within 15 minutes of the call made to 902, and a qualitative one, to increase the people’s confidence in the police. The new police cars will ensure greater mobility, especially in rural areas.

Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola said that today’s event is a step forward in the process of transforming the Ministry of the Interior from a force one into a Ministry that would serve the population. “Increasing confidence in the police is a key element in a fully functional society,” he stated.

Head of the General Police Inspectorate Ion Bodrug said the cars are outfitted with incandescent ramps, holographic schemes, fire extinguishers, medical kits, tires for winter and other necessary devices.

The European Union provided 23 million lei for buying the 164 vehicles and for equipping them. All the police stations will also receive computers and printers to the value of almost 2 million lei. Furthermore, this weeken, 36 cars will be distributed to local police inspectorates for dispatcher’s offices and intervention groups.
