The 32nd anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty is celebrated today, June 23. On this occasion, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, at the beginning of the Parliament sitting, said that by the adoption of this Declaration, one of the first steps towards the Independence of the Republic of Moldova was taken, IPN reports.

“I congratulate everyone on this historic day, the Day of Sovereignty, and I wish the next big country project to be the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union,” stated Igor Grosu.

In the same connection, an exhibition of epoch documents, including the copy of the Declaration of Sovereignty, was mounted in the Parliament Building. The text of the Declaration says that “sovereignty is exercised in the interests of all the people by the supreme representative body of the state power of the Republic of Moldova. No part of the people, no group of citizens, no political party or public organization, no other entity, no private individual can assume the right to exercise sovereignty”.

The Declaration of Sovereignty was adopted by the deputies of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic on June 23, 1990. This laid at the basis of the Constitution, which is the supreme law of the Republic of Moldova. The adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty is considered the first important victory of the democratic forces in the national renaissance and liberation struggle.
