28% of the social-cultural facilities of the 402 inspected by the State Construction Inspectorate last year do not provide disabled access or the stairs are not adjusted to the needs of persons with reduced mobility, IPN reports.

Many of the existing ramps are not of the required width, while the slope angle makes access difficult. Some of them do not have a balustrade. The construction inspectors gave the authorities time to remove the identified violations by September.

The Construction Projects Examination Service in the future will not study projects that do not provide wheelchair access for persons with reduced mobility, while the local public authorities and the State Construction Inspectorate will not allow the facilities to be put into operation.

Asked by IPN, head of the Public Association “Motivatie” Igor Mereacre said that according to his data, 99% of the institutions do not have wheelchair access. Thus, the persons with locomotor disabilities cannot take part in the social life and some of their rights are limited. The Association called on society to take part in the drawing up of the Accessibility Map so as to identify all the institutions without disabled access.
