€25m for building solid waste management infrastructure

The Republic of Moldova will borrow €25 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for building solid waste management infrastructure and purchasing transportation, sorting, recycling and composting equipment for a number of districts of the country. The Government approved the draft decision on the initiation of negotiations on the draft lending agreement with the EBRD, IPN reports.

Under the draft, the money will be used to implement the project in three waste management regions: RMD 5 – the districts of Ungheni, Nisporeni and Călărași; RMD 8 – the districts of Edineț, Dondușeni, Ocnița and Briceni and RMD 1 – the districts of Cahul, Cantemir, Taraclia and also the local public authorities of ATU Gagauzia (Comrat, Vulcănești and Ceadâr-Lunga).

Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov, secretary of state at the Ministry of Environment, said that this project will enable to liquidate the unauthorized waste dumps existing in a number of localities of the country.

The Moldovans will have access to high-quality services in the field of solid waste management. The quantities of stored waste will be reduced and the areas covered by solid waste management services will be increased.

The loan is to be repaired in 15 years. The grace period is of four years.
