The municipal councilors on April 2 agreed the Chisinau budget for 2013 in the final reading. The budget was approved by the votes of 26 councilors. The representatives of the PCRM and PSRM in the Chisinau Council abstained from voting, IPN reports.

The budget provides for revenues of 2.7 billion lei and an expenditure of about 2.8 billion lei. The deficit is 20 million lei. 55% of the spending is intended for the social sector. Over 1 billion lei was earmarked for education alone.

The deficit is to be covered with the about 30 million lei planned to be earned from the sale or privatization of public property. Over 75 million lei will come from foreign sources of financing. A sum of 84 million lei was allocated for paying the foreign loans.

After the approval of the budget, Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca congratulated the councilors and apologized for insulting some of his colleagues in the recent past, arguing his state was due to the delay in adopting the budget. For the second year in a row, the budget is agreed in April.

Liberal-Democratic councilor Ghenadie Ivashchenko said it was a record budget for Chisinau. “This is an unprecedented budget. We have a record budget for repairing 12 Chisinau streets and for modernizing public transport. We hope that all the money will be put to good use by the end of the year,” he stated.

The budget deficit in 2012 was 451 million lei.
