The polluted condition of many villages, towns and cities in Moldova determined authorities to designated 2007 the Sanitation Year. The project aims at spurring the activities related to the sanitation of settlements across Moldova.
The Government has appointed a national committee for the organisation and implementation of the campaign which is headed by Vitalie Vrabie, the Minister of Local Public Administration. The committee was tasked to present an action plan in this respect within 15 days. The plan has to include deadlines and responsibilities.
According to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, despite the actions undertaken to make settlements clean they are not efficient because of actions’ sporadic character. These activities are usually performed by volunteers because, Minister Constantin Mihailescu says, the majority of villages do not have public sanitation services. Also these services have a low quality in towns and cities too. Dumps do not meet standards, and hundreds of unauthorised dumps are systematically liquidated.
The major goal of the campaign is to settle the situation in all settlements and to keep them clean, as well as the national and public roadways. It also aims at creating a policy in the field of public sanitation.
