Over 442,000 citizens or 16.14% of the electorate voted in the national constitutional referendum by midday. The data were provided by the chairwoman of the Central Election Commission Angelica Caraman at a news conference, IPN reports.

The referendum will be validated if at least one third of the voters put on electoral rolls – about 940,000 – go to the polls. At the same time, the law will be considered adopted if the majority of citizens who participated in the referendum voted “For”.

The data are presented by the Central Election Commission with a slight delay as they are not collected in the information system in real time, as it is the case of the presidential election. In the case of the referendum, the number of signatures for the second ballot is reported by each polling station, the CEC head said.

In the referendum, citizens must answer YES or NO to the question “Are you for amending the Constitution for enshrining the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union in it?”. Two paragraphs are to be added to the Constitution to reaffirm the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the country’s European path.
