Fifteen years ago, on March 2, 1992, Moldova became the member of the United Nations (UN), accepting to help achieving the aspirations and principles outlined in the UN Charter, specifically to maintain peace and security, international cooperation in economic, social, cultural, humanitarian fields, and respect the fundamental human rights and freedoms. On that day, by signing the UN Charter, Moldova committed itself to support UN’s efforts in addressing problems that challenge humanity and in solving them, contributing to Moldova’s affirmation on the international arena and to the strengthening of its independence and sovereignty. Following accession, Moldova constantly participates along with other member states in settling worldwide and regional issues, in creating a favourable framework for receiving foreign assistance necessary to make reforms happen, in consolidating the rule of law and the country’s development. UN carries out an ample activity in Moldova by means of its programmes, funds and specialised agencies. During these years, Moldova has enjoyed technical assistance and guidance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Children’ Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), International Labour Organisation (ILO), Wold Health Organisation (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The United Nations came into existence on 24 October 1945, after the Charter had been ratified by the five permanent members of the Security Council. The stated aims of the United Nations are to prevent war, to promote human rights, to provide a mechanism for international law, and to promote social progress and improved living standards. UN is the single international forum within the framework of which all the states can be represented and can participate in debating worldwide problems. UN has 192 members at present. During the night between March 1 and 2, 1992, when Moldova became a UN member state, troops of the Transnistrian Guard and Cossacks units attacked the police post in Dubasari. This incident marked the beginning of the war between the auto-proclaimed “Transnistrian Republic” and Moldova.
