1451 tonnes of pesticides and dangerous chemical products on the territory of Moldova have been repacked in 2006 and 2007, by the special teams of the National Army, with the financial support of the foreign donors from about 15 countries.
According to the Maj. Mariana Grama, assistant project manager, the repacking process has just ended; next the specialists will focus on determining the nature of the unknown pesticide stocks. Until now, about 2500 samples of unknown pesticides have been obtained from 34 districts of the country.
According to her, the Mission of the Republic of Moldova to Belgium is soon to present a report concerning the finalisation of the works on repacking pesticides and identifying unknown pesticides at the special meeting of the NATO Political-Military Steering Committee. At the same time, Moldova’s representatives to NATO will solicit the necessary assistance for disposing of the pesticides.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Anatol Spivacenco stated at an interministerial meeting dedicated to pesticides that the complete implementation of the project for disposing of pesticides will eliminate environment hazards in Moldova. Anatol Spivacenco pointed out that the pesticides have been repacked and stocked in compliance with all the safety rules, which is proved by the fact that no cases of intoxication have been registered.
