From the begging of this summer swimming season, 12 persons from Transnistria drowned in the Nistru river, according to the interior ministry of the breakaway republic. The body of a 33-year-old man has been recently retrieved near a water treatment facility in Tiraspol the third day after he drowned. These and other drownings are further investigated by the prosecutors. Alcohol abuse is apparently the leading cause of drowning deaths, as the Nistru is known for its strong currents and bumpy bottom. Each year, the number of drowning deaths is increasing. The local militsiya announced they would intensify patrols on the beaches along the Nistru to crack down on the abuse of alcohol. Currently a private firm in Tiraspol is building a large water park.
