Some 12% of the roads in Moldova are in a very bad state. The authorities now manage contracts to rehabilitate road infrastructure to the total value of about €200 million. The total length of the public roads on January 1 this year was of 10,684 km. The data were presented in hearings staged by the Parliament’s commission on economy, budget and finance, IPN reports.

Secretary of State in charge of constructions and road infrastructure Anatol Usatyi said that over 1 million lei was invested in the repair and building of roads from the Road Fund last year. There were installed over 900 road signs, repaired more than 55 km of public roads and built six new bridges.

The works to rehabilitate the national road R1 Chisinau Ungheni Sculeni will be expectedly finished in the second half of this year. The national road R16 Balti Falesti – Sculeni, which is financed with loans from the EBRD, was 25% rehabilitated.

MP Stefan Creanga, head of the commission on economy, budget and finance, said the people expect good roads to be built with the money they pay as taxes and the competent institutions should make sure that this is done.

According to the director general of the State Road Administration Gheorghe Curmei, seven agreements to rehabilitate the roads were terminated owing to the non-observance of the contract clauses, while the involved business entities were penalized.

As a result of the hearings, the commission will submit proposals for improving the situation in the field to the Government.
