Moldovan athletes won eleven medals after the first week of the 2024 Armwrestling and Para-armwrestling World Championships, taking place in Chisinau.
According to the Ministry of Education and Research, to date, the best result in armwrestling was achieved by Alexei Şipilov (up to 85 kg), who became world champion among youth, and world vice champion in the left arm event.
In the junior category, Tiberius Țurcan (up to 55 kg) won two silver medals, and Alina Iordachi (up to 70 kg) and Dumitru Bulat (up to 90 kg) won bronze medals. Sergiu Croitor (up to 100 kg) also came in third place, only in the senior grand masters category.
Moldova also took possession of two world champion titles in the para-armwrestling contest thanks to Ion Buchili (+85 kg, amputee class) and Anton Nacu (up to 60 kg, locomotor disability class). Also in the para-armwrestling events, Gheorghe Străjescu (up to 60 kg) became world vice champion among juniors with spastic disabilities, and Vladimir Butucea (up to 100 kg) won the bronze medal in the visually impaired category.
On August 23 and 24, the seniors competitions will be held, where Moldova will be represented by 15 athletes.
1,500 athletes from 61 countries are participating in the 2024 Armwrestling and Para-armwrestling World Championship, hosted by the Republic of Moldova.
