Eleven centralized irrigation systems in Moldova will be restored within the Compact Program, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to the head of the Compact-funded Transition to High Value Agriculture Project Sergiu Iuncu, at the first stage the responsibility for maintaining and managing seven of the 11 centralized irrigation systems will be shifted onto water users associations. The seven systems are functional and will be repaired in a shorter period of time.
The 11 systems will be used to irrigate 15,000 hectares of farmland. About 3,000 families will benefit from these services.
93 kilometers of the Sarateni-Soroca road will be repaired within another project funded by the Compact Program – Road Rehabilitation. Valentin Bozu, senior consultant of the team of the Millennium Challenge Fund Moldova - the unity for implementing the Compact Program - said they are now working on the feasibility studies and the company that will carry out the works will be selected by this yearend.
“ The activities carried out within the Compact Program and the way that the allocated money is used will be monitored by specialized institutions from outside the Program and from other countries than Moldova and the U.S. The reports will be public and will be available for civil society, which plays an important role in monitoring the program,” Valentin Bozu said.
The U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation provided US$262 million to Moldova for implementing the Compact Program.
If the money is not used within the set term of five years, it will be lost.
