The European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) launch a new flagship project of 10 million euros aiming to support the authorities of the Republic of Moldova in advancing its green transformation agenda. The kick start of the four-year EU-UNDP project, “Enabling an Inclusive Green Transition in the Republic of Moldova”, was conducted on 9 May, 2024, in Chisinau, within the European Village event celebrating Europe Day.

The EU Green Deal – a set of policy initiatives to be transposed by Moldova in its process of EU accession – is at the core of the project, which will raise awareness, enhance capacities, and promote investments in a low-emission and resource-efficient economy, all these with the final goal of achieving climate neutrality, delivering on the commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Daniela Gasparikova, UNDP Resident Representative to the Republic of Moldova, said the launched project aims to create prerequisites for the adoption of green technologies and practices by the private sector, by Moldovan citizens in their daily lives and encourages development of environmentally responsible businesses. “We will support innovative green solutions across various economic sectors – for example by introducing circular economy principles of reduce, reuse/repair and recycle – and thus facilitate creation of new business opportunities, driving efficiency gains and reducing pressures on our environment,” noted Daniela Gasparikova.

Solomon Ioannou, Program Manager at the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, said the transition to a green economy is not only necessary for the preservation of our planet, but it also presents numerous economic opportunities. By investing in renewable energy sources, sustainable infrastructure, and green technologies, Europe can create new jobs, stimulate innovation, and drive economic growth.

The project will support piloting of innovative green solutions in various economic sectors. New business models focused on recycling, reusing, and repairing will be put into practice.

Another focus of the project will be implementing extended producer responsibility principles, promoting renewable energy technology, setting up energy plantations for solid biomass fuel production, piloting of sustainable mobility and green transportation measures and upgrading air quality monitoring infrastructure. To build public support around the green transition cause, people will be encouraged to embrace green practices in their daily routines and entrepreneurs will be empowered to grow sustainable businesses.
