The platform aims to combine the efforts of the national intellectuals and politicians with an assumed Romanian identity in order to unmask and overcome the anti-Romanian Moldovan stereotypes, implanted for two centuries by the tsarist and Soviet colonial policies. It also aims to support a political and electoral project that would ensure the representation of a significant unionist segment in the future Parliament, guaranteeing the strengthening of the European course and the pursuing of state policies on the Romanian identity of the Republic of Moldova.
Adoption of National Reunification Manifesto
The year 2025 is announced to be decisive for the Republic of Moldova given that the idea of national reunification returns to the forefront of public and electoral debates. The increased interest in the union with Romania is supported both by the regional geopolitical conjuncture and by the pro-European aspirations of Moldovan Romanians. In this context, it is expected to be adopted the National Reunification Manifesto - a programmatic document that can significantly influence the 2025 election campaign.
The manifesto will establish the principles and strategic objectives for achieving the union of the Republic of Moldova with Romania, including:
historical arguments – reaffirmation of the Romanian identity and the artificial character of the separation of the two states;
economic arguments – the advantages of EU integration, access to European development funds and higher living standards;
political arguments – strengthening of democracy and security through integration into a NATO and EU member state;
social arguments – protection of cultural identity and improvement of public services;
guaranteeing the rights of national minorities, according to European standards.
2025 elections: a test for unionist ideal
The 2025 election campaign will certainly include the union theme. The pro-European parties will have to plead either for an accelerated European path through unification or for maintaining the sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova. In this context, the pro-Russian forces will seek to promote a Eurasian orientation, as opposed to the pro-European direction.
On the pro-European flank, the ruling party PAS risks not obtaining a new parliamentary majority, and the other pro-European parties fail to pass the electoral threshold. If this situation persists, part of the pro-European votes risk being redistributed to anti-European forces. The solution lies in the formation of a broad alliance of sovereigntist-pro-European parties around the PAS.
The situation on the unionist flank is even more intricate. The PAS's deficient identity policies generated disappointment among the unionist electorate, shaping the risk of electoral absenteeism. The only solution for mobilizing this segment is to strengthen a civic and political pole, which would propose a credible unionist electoral project. Given that the self-proclaimed unionist parties are weak and divided, the National Reunification Platform becomes the last hope for the consolidation of the unionist forces.
Single unionist electoral list
A national unionist electoral list for the 2025 parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova can represent a strategic opportunity to maximize the chances of unionists to enter Parliament and promote a clear program of partnership and, eventually, union with Romania. Given some of the unionist parties’ resistance to unification in a single electoral pole for reasons of pride or interests, the task of forming this list falls to the National Reunification Platform, where opinion leaders and unionist personalities, including members of the diaspora, will play an essential role.
The list must be made up of credible and experienced people, supported by a coherent and unitary message, as the only solution for mobilizing the unionist electorate. The electoral campaign must be based on emotional mobilization, highlighting the economic and social advantages of the union.
A close strategic objective of the future unionist parliamentary group must be the promotion and devising of a Treaty of special relations and brotherhood between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, which would put into practice a project of conditional union, similar to the historical precedent voted by the People’s Council on March 27, 1918.
Conclusion
The National Reunification Platform and the single unionist electoral list represent the only chance for unionists to influence the future of the Republic of Moldova during the short period of time that separates us from the parliamentary elections of this autumn. If it is possible to overcome internal disputes and focus on the common goal, this project could ensure the protection of the European course of the Republic of Moldova and the creation of conditions for Romanian national reunification.
