One thousand smart water meters, equipped with remote data transmission modules, were installed in 18 apartment buildings in the municipality of Ungheni. Worth about 80,000 euros, the meters were bought with funds provided by the “EU4Moldova: Key Regions” Program, implemented by UNDP and UNICEF.

Petru Scutaru, director of the water and sewer utility Apa-Canal Ungheni, believes that the installation of meters with remote modules will increase the maintenance capacity of the water infrastructure administered by the utility.

The local authorities and Apa-Canal Ungheni intend to install smart meters in all apartment buildings, and also in educational institutions. Today the municipality of Ungheni has a water supply coverage rate of 96% and a sanitation coverage rate of 56%.

Thanks to the EU4Moldova: Key Regions Program, new sewer lines were built for eight streets in the city’s center and Berești-Vasilica neighborhood. Also, a new water supply line was built with a length of over 1,600 meters, which provides drinking water to over 24,000 people. The total value is over 470,000 euros, an amount that also includes the local contribution.

With the support of the EU and UNDP, a new water reservoir was built as well, which has a capacity of 1000 m3, an investment worth over 245,000 euros, which provides drinking water to consumers in the municipality and the villages of Zagarancea and Semeni, but also offers the possibility for at least 28 rural communities to connect to the public drinking water supply system.
