This year it is celebrated 100 years of the Congress of Moldovan Soldiers of October 1917 and the declaration of the Moldovan Democratic Republic. On this occasion, a scientific conference was held at the Army House in Chisinau on October 20. This brought together historians, experts in political sciences, scientists, soldiers and others. The participants said that even if the opinions about these events are contradictory, these are important historical moments for the nation and for the continuity of the statehood of the Moldovan state, IPN reports.

Chairman of the public association “Union of Officers of the Republic of Moldova” Victor Gaiciuc, ex-minister of defense and brigade general in reserve, said the Congress of Moldovan Soldiers was held 100 years ago and this laid the basis of the statehood of the Moldovan Democratic Republic. As a result of the Congress, there was created the first legislative body – the People’s Council. The Moldovan Democratic Republic was proclaimed on December 2. “I’m proud that I am a Moldovan and a military man. Knowing the history and the effort made by those who contributed to our independence, we will be able to build further an independent and sovereign state and it is important to ensure peace and welfare,” stated Victor Gaiciuc.

Dean at the Institute of International Relations, Doctor of History Victor Stepaniuc said the events that occurred 100 years ago are regrettably depicted in literature contradictorily, but all the groups of historians accept that the events took place. The statehood was established in several stages and these covered the Russian Revolution of February 1917 and World War I in which over 300,000 Moldovan soldiers from Bessarabia took part and struggled for the independence of Bessarabia, for the Moldovan language and the creation of a temporary parliament that would form a Moldovan state, by the example of other peoples. Peasant and public congresses and the Congress of Moldovan Soldiers were held. The latter lasted for seven days since October 20 and the People’s Council was set up as a result. The Moldovan Democratic Republic was declared on December 2, 1917.

Attending the event, Corneliu Popovich, the President’s adviser on education, culture and research, noted the constant support provided by President Igor Dodon to the initiatives to study and promote the history of our nation, the history of Moldova. He also signed a decree on the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the Moldovan Democratic Republic. These events are very important for the nation’s history and their celebration contributes to educating the young generation in a patriotic spirit and to strengthening the Moldovan multinational society.

The scientific conference forms part of the series of events staged by the commission for organizing the events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the Moldovan Democratic Republic that was constituted by presidential decree.
