The Alliance for the Centenary that consists of unionist organizations has launched a campaign to collect 1 million signatures in favor of Moldova’s union with Romania. In a news conference at IPN on May 14, the head of the public association “Unirea – ODIP” Vlad Biletski said a petition will be compiled based on the signatures to demand that the Parliament of Moldova should initiate a consultative referendum on the union of the two Romanian states. The Parliament of Romania will also be requested to organize a referendum on the union and to amend the Constitution of Romania so as to introduce the strategic objective of the “union” for the next few years.
“Unirea – ODIP” coordinator Mihai Soltan said two tents were put up in Chisinau municipality to collect signatures, one near the Central Post Office and another one at the Dokuchyaev Market. In August, mobile teams will travel through localities to collect signatures. Those who want can also sign for the union at the association’s head office. The Moldovans and Romanians from the country and from the diaspora can also sign for the union through the electronic platform semnez.eu. “It is a beneficial process for our cause – the union. The goal is to no longer have borders on the Prut,” stated George Simion.
National Unity Bloc president Ion Leashchenko said the collection of signatures is a very important democratic exercise that mobilized a lot of people. “It is important that we all mobilize. The Republic of Moldova and Romania are the last two separated states,” he noted.
