Some 0.2% of the population of the Republic of Moldova has been vaccinated against COVID-19 until now. These are frontline health workers who got the first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine, epidemiologist of the National Public Health Agency Alexei Ceban stated in a news conference. The COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Moldova started on March 2, IPN reports.
According to Ceban, about 7,300 health workers of reanimatology and intensive care units and of COVID-19 hospitals have been vaccinated until now. The second dose to them will be administered in two months. Over 18,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines have been distributed all over the country.
Laura Țurcan, epidemiologist of the National Public Health Agency, noted that 3.6% of the vaccinated persons had minor side effects, such as edema, pruritus, headaches, muscle pain, fever and tiredness.
Ninel Revenco, coordinator of the COVID-19 national vaccination campaign, said Moldova is to receive 21,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine at end-March and another 72,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine at end-April, through the COVAX Facility. At the end of this month, Moldova will also receive 24,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine through UNICEF and the second stage of the vaccination campaign could be thus started. This covers persons aged 60 and over and those with chronic diseases. The administered vaccines showed efficiency also against the British variant of the virus.
The Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection on March 9 reported over 870 new cases of COVID-19, with the total number of infections rising to about 196,000. Also, 21 persons succumbed to the virus after developing complications.
