Police officers and civilians hurt during April 2009 events will receive allocations

The Government will provide allocations to the civilians and police officers who were hurt during the protests of April 7, 2009. The size of the compensation will depend on the damage caused to the victims, Info-Prim Neo reports. The subject was discussed at the first meeting of the governmental commission for identifying the victims of the April 2009 events and the methods of helping them held on April 22. The Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Health and nongovernmental organizations that have databases about these persons will be involved in the identification process. The victims can submit applications to the commission's secretariat. The address of the secretariat, the telephone number and the application form will be published on the Government's official website on April 26. “Not much is known about the victims of those tragic events, who included protesters and passersby as well as police officers. We decided to provide compensations so that the people feel they are protected by the state,” Minister of Justice Alexandru Tanase, who heads the commission, said at the meeting. Ion Guzun, project coordinator at the Moldova Institute for Human Rights, suggested examining the possibility of providing assistance to the relatives of the young persons who died as a result of those events. Deputy Minister of the Interior Iurie Cheptanaru said the institution that he represents has identified 271 victims among police employees. “The carabineers then included soldiers who finished their military service already. It is now difficult to find them,” Cheptanaru said. The term during which commission will work has not been set, but Minister Alexandru Tanase said it will not be long. The commission consists of Deputy Minister of the Interior Iurie Cheptanaru, Deputy Minister of Health Gheorghe Turcanu, Deputy Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family Vadim Pistrinciuc, Deputy Minister of Eduction Loretta Handrabura, Deputy Minister of State Anatolie Onceanu, and the head of the Institute for Human RightsVanu Jereghi. Snejana Turcanu, senior consultant at the State Chancellery's social development division, is the commission's secretary.
