The amendments proposed to the Broadcasting Code affect the freedom of expression more seriously than while we were under the Communist regime, executive director of the Association of Independent Press Petru Macovei said in the talk show “Interpol” on TV 7 channel, IPN reports.

According to Macovei, the authors of the bill that was put forward by the MPs of the PLDM and PDM pursued two goals, namely to liquidate the inconvenient media outlets and to monopolize the televised publicity. ”It’s impossible to implement articles 6 and 7 of this bill, especially when the politicians refuse to come to programs where inconvenient questions are put to them, while the state institutions hinder the journalists’ access to information of public interest. I think the politicians dig their burial place themselves. If they are unable to cope with the challenges and with journalists’ questions, they shouldn’t have entered politics,” he stated.

The director of the media organization noted that if this bill is adopted in the proposed variant, censorship will be instituted in the mass media. “Nobody wants to be penalized. I think some of the bill’s provisions concerning restrictions should not be discussed or subject to public debates. They must be simply excluded,” he stated.

Petru Macovei expressed his regret at the fact that some of the journalists supported this bill. “The behavior of some of the journalists is inexplicable. A so-called National Association of Journalists emailed a press release saying they support this bill. It is even more regrettable that some of the TV channels broadcast news based on this communiqué that came from an unknown address and without contact data. They issued a communique that does not represent the interests of the journalistic guild of Moldova. Regretfully, we see that in our country the number of journalists who do their job remains unchanged, while of the non-professional journalists increases,” he stated.
