The Party “Action and Solidarity” and the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” will ask the voters who they prefer as a candidate for President: Maia Sandu (PAS) or Andrei Nastase (PPDA). At the same time, the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) announced that it will support any of the two candidates when the voters take a decision. The leaders of the three parties - Maia Sandu, Andrei Nastase and Viorel Cibotaru – made such statements in the program “Shadow Cabinet” on Jurnal TV channel, IPN reports.
Maia Sandu said that if some elementary calculations are done, it becomes clear that the parties with own candidates have slim chances of going through to the second round of the presidential elections. The election campaign will last for one month and this period is not enough for campaigning appropriately. “We know the situation of the press too. This is concentrated in the hands of one person. The chances of an anti-oligarchic party grow if the candidate is common. We initially had discussions that involved four parties, including the PPEM, and we regret the decision of this party,” stated the politician.
According to the PAS leader, they considered the possibility of identifying another candidate, from outside the parties, but, given that the electoral period is short and the election campaign starts on October 1, they realized that it will be hard for this candidate to reach all the voters. “The people will decide who the candidate should be,” said Maia Sandu.
Andrei Nastase said that besides increasing the chances of the anti-oligarchic candidate, they also aim to reduce the chances of the candidates on who the first deputy chairman of the Democratic Party Vlad Plahotniuc will count. “We know that there will be several candidates. I think we took such a decision late, but we took it and are open to other forces, including civil ones, as we want to increase our forces and chances,” he stated.
Andrei Nastase also said that the PPDA during the next few days will ask the Central Election Commission to allow carrying out an audit of the electoral rolls so as to see where they cheat and what the real situation is.
PLDM chairman Viorel Cibotaru said that when the Constitutional Court restored the people’s right to choose the Head of State, they initiated discussions to identify a common candidate. “When the state is captured and regression is witnessed on the path of European integration, the process must include candidates with real chances, with the biggest chances. The PLDM is a serious platform for this candidate – either Maia Sandu or Andrei Nastase. The PLDM won the local elections. It has a massive presence at the local level and everyone will become involved in this campaign. Together with the voters, we will reach a common decision. It will be an assumed vote,” stated the politician.
On August 8, the three political leaders issued a joint statement saying that they will announce a common candidate for President when the time is opportune. The mechanism for identifying this with the assistance of the people hasn’t been revealed.
