Only 1/3 of parents know how money paid at school is spent, study

40.2% of the parents who make informal or formal payments in education institutions do it because the other parents also do so. Another 15% are convinced that this way they contribute to the improvement of the physical conditions at school and to the quality of studies, shows a study conducted by the Public Policy Institute and CBS-AXA, with the support of Soros Foundation Moldova, IPN reports.

5.8% of the parents who took part in the survey said they have to make the payments set by the school’s administration, while another 21% said they fear their children may be somehow isolated if they do not pay the required taxes. 16% of the respondents said they fear that problems may appear if they do not pay these taxes.

The study also shows that only 38% of the parents know how the money they pay at school is spent. At national level, the level of transparency of the financial activities of parents’ associations is very low, while the budget was made public only by several associations.

Most of the parents are dissatisfied with the quality of education received by their children. The parents consider that the school program is heavy, while the equipment is insufficient. They are also dissatisfied with the way the Baccalaureate exams are organized.

The survey was carried out on a sample of 1,107 respondents from all over the country. The margin of sampling error is 3%.
