A boy aged one year and one month from Durlesti was rushed to the Mother and Child Institute as he almost chocked to death on a walnut kernel. Head of the Institute’s Endoscopy Section Valentinа Rascov has told IPN that the walnut kernel got stuck in the bronchi and the child was unable to breathe.
The boy was taken to the hospital after midnight. He was breathing with difficulty. The doctors managed to take the kernel out and the child’s state of health is now satisfactory.
Valentinа Rascov said that when foreign bodies are taken out, parts of them can remain in the body and can cause inflammation. In order to avoid this, the child will be subject to lavage.
The head of the Endoscopy Section urged the parents to feed the children only on food appropriate for their age because such food as sunflower seeds and walnut kernel can get stuck in the esophagus. Risks exist also when the children are fed by other children, including the brother or sister.
If a child inhales a foreign body, he/she must be put with the face down on the femur and be hit between the shoulder bones. Specific endonominal treatment is required, which is done with special medical equipment.
