From January 1, 2014, the official language on the territory of the Autonomous Unit Gagauzia will be named ‘Moldovan’ not Romanian. At school the students will study the history of Moldova and the Moldovan language and literature. Such a decision was taken by the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia on October 4.
Initiative author, MP Ivan Burgudji said the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova names Moldovan as the official langue. Thus, the decision of the People’s Assembly represents compliance with the provisions of the supreme law.
The decision of the deputies of the People’s Assembly was supported by the Governor of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal, who took part in the meeting. “We cannot study the history of the neighboring country,” he stated, referring to Romania.
