The medical assistants in Nisporeni visit repeatedly the families with children younger than five to inform the parents about the risks to which the kids are exposed at home and to give them by a responsible behavior guide. Silvia Profiri, local coordinator of the national awareness-raising campaign “A danger-free home for your child” in Nisporeni district, has told IPN that the number of home accidents involving children in Nisporeni district decreased by about 80% after the parents were warned about the possible dangers. Repeated visits will be paid by May.
Silvia Profiri, who is the main specialist in mother and child assistance at the district Doctors Center, said the medical workers make additional visits to the families in order to heighten the parents’ awareness of the risks to which the children are exposed at home. They make recommendations for preventing poisonings, burns, scalds, drownings or choking, which are the most often accidents involving children.
The local coordinator also said that changes are visible after the previous visits. The parents understood that the chemical substances, drugs and other dangerous substances and things must be kept far from children. The children must not be left unsupervised in the kitchen, where there are hot dishes and liquids and fire.
According to Silvia Profiri, there are parents who haven’t yet realized all the dangers and do not take into account the advice of the specialists. The medical assistants will strive to persuade them that the life and health of the little ones depend a lot on the adults’ responsibility. It is hard to communicate with socially deprived families, where the children are often left alone for different reasons. The specialists are trying to find solutions to various situations together with the parents.
”We hope that by this campaign, we will be able to convince the parents that a thing that seems inoffensive can cause a tragedy in the home,” said Silvia Profiri. Over 800 families from 33 settlements will be visited within the campaign.
