Moldova wins UN Public Service Award

The Republic of Moldova was for the first time honored with the United Nations Public Service Award alongside another four countries. The trophy was offered for the set of initiatives aimed at increasing decisional transparency and participation of civil society in decision making, which were launched and implemented by the State Chancellery in 2009-2012.

According to a communiqué from the Government, the five awards were conferred in the category “Fostering citizen participation in decision making through innovative mechanisms”. The jury selected Moldova for the normative framework adopted, including the Law on Transparency in Decision Making, creation of the portal www.particip.gov.md, constitution of the National Participation Council, which transformed the dialogue between civil society and the Government into a norm.

Launched ten years ago by the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs, the contest is intended for public institutions that implemented innovative projects and identified solutions to challenges existing in the national public services.

The United Nations Public Service Awards will be handed over on June 23, when it is celebrated the Public Service Day worldwide. Moldova started to mark this day in 2012.
