Moldova to pay €61,000 damages in three cases examined by ECHR

The Government of Moldova will pay €61,000 damages in three cases tried by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). In all the three cases, the Government reached agreements with the plaintiffs and the High Court took notice of this, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué from Promo-LEX Association.

In the first case, a young man from Cahul was maltreated by the police in April 2009. The man was held under arrested for over 18 years and was beaten naked. On April 9, 2009, a criminal case was started against him. He was accused of mass disorder and was held in a remand center for another six days, period during which he was also ill-treated. The sides agreed on €15,000 damages.

In the second case, two young men from Chisinau were arrested in 2008 for attacking police officers in a café. They were in the café together with the wife and child of one of them. At a certain moment, a quarrel arouse between them and several policemen. The young men were taken to the police station and were beaten and held there. The woman was also ill-treated, but wasn’t arrested. The Government agreed to pay by €13,000 to the two men and €10,000 to the woman.

In the third case, a woman sentenced to 15 years in jail had been maltreated in prison for a long period and was refused medical care. Owing to her state of health that worsened annually, the woman was discharged in eight years. In this case, the Government of Moldova admitted its guilt and accepted to pay €10,000 to the woman.
