Mental Health Community Center inaugurated in Orhei

The second Mental Health Community Center in Moldova, set up within the mental health services reform, was inaugurated in Orhei town on October 9, on the eve of the World Mental Health Day, IPN reports.

The Center in Orhei was equipped in the same way as the Mental Health Community Centers in the Netherlands. It includes an occupational therapy hall, a procedures hall, two medical offices and a social worker’s office. These were fully outfitted with last generation equipment and modern furniture. The Center employs a psychologist, two psychiatrists, one of whom is specialized in the treatment of children with mental disorders, four medical assistants and a social worker.

These monitored over 3,000 beneficiaries, more than 300 of whom are children. The most frequent mental health problems are mental retardation, organic mental disorders, schizophrenia and epilepsy. The Center’s team of professionals was trained by experts of Trimbos Moldova and of Trimbos Instituut and GGZ Noord-Holland-Noord, of the Netherlands, how to apply flexible treatment methods.

Natalia Cernat, communication coordinator of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, said that for Orhei district, the opening of the Center means availability of social and medical mental health services from which those affected by mental disorders can benefit whenever they need, in a friendly environment, close to the place of residence and the family.

Ionela Petrea, manager of the mental health services reform in Moldova project, said that this year the World Mental Health Day draws attention to the importance of respecting the rights of the persons with mental health problems, in particular by respecting their dignity.

Victoria Condrat, executive director of Trimbos Moldova, said that specialized mental health assistance and care that meet the European standards became now available in Orhei too, through this new community center.

World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health. In Moldova, statistical data show that the number of mental and behavioral disorders rose slightly in 2014. There were 61.8 cases per 10,000 people, as against to 59 cases in 2013.
